Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was found guilty of plotting a government overthrow in last fall and given more than 27 years in incarceration, but he remained under confinement pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the decision to arrest the elderly politician was a safety action after recent developments emerged.

This encompassed trying to remove his tracking device and a invitation to a demonstration that could "allow for a potential flight.

Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks

In a filing authorising the detention, the judge said information from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his escape.

Context of Sentencing

He was found guilty of leading a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, Lula.

High Court judges said that he was aware of a scheme which included plans to assassinate Lula and his VP candidate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to imprison and murder the presiding judge - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing his judicial proceedings.

The scheme was thwarted because it didn't receive the support of the army and air force commanders. Lula was sworn in without incident on 1 January 2023.

But a week later, on 8 January, numerous Bolsonaro supporters attacked and damaged government buildings in the national capital, the capital city.
